On the anniversary of Ichigo's mother's death, Ichigo and his family decide to visit her grave. While visiting, Ichigo remembers when his mother died. A shinigami, a spirit, visits Rukia and inquires why she hasn't returned to the soul society. Ichigo tells the shinigami that he is a substitute for Rukia while she gets her powers back which he finds out is illegal. During this, Ichigo's sisters are being attacked by a Hollow monster
